Status Update:
The Big Bang Fair South East 2020 is postponed

We are in discussions with EngineeringUK and hope to bring you exciting BIG news in September 2020!

The Big Bang Fair South East (BBFSE) brings together school children, teachers, STEM employers, STEM Ambassadors and volunteers in a unique festival atmosphere to celebrate all things STEM.

FREE for schools to attend, the aim is to inspire students to continue studying STEM subjects and pursue STEM careers with a view to reducing the STEM skills gap.

2019’s event welcomed over 13,000 school children from 215 schools in the South East

121 employers made STEM subjects fun and relevant by hosting shows, demonstrations, workshops and providing hands on activities

Organised by Sussex STEM, it is the largest regional event in a national programme led by EngineeringUK

In 2019, 95% of students surveyed enjoyed themselves and 81% said they learnt a lot by taking part.

The event is also host to the Regional Heats and Award Ceremony for the Big Bank UK Young Scientists and Engineers Competition.

Get Involved … Employers and Activity Providers

We are continually working to strengthen the links between STEM businesses and education in the South East. The event provides STEM providers and employers with excellent opportunities to:

Support local schools and network with like-minded businesses from across the SE region

Provide a variety of interactive STEM activities such as virtual reality, computer programming and engineering workshops

Sponsor or donate prizes; or be a judge in the regional heats of the Big Bang UK Young Scientists & Engineers Competition

Volunteer at the event

If you’re an employer/activity provider and would like more information please contact us on 0345 6080190  /  If you are interested in sponsorship, please visit our Sponsorship Opportunities page.

Get Involved … Schools

The BBFSE provides your students with a great insight into the range of STEM careers that are available, with the aim of inspiring them to continue studying STEM subjects

In 2019, 13,492 students and teachers attended the event, coming from from 215 schooIs in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, East Sussex, Essex, Greater London, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Kent, Surrey, and West Sussex

The Big Bang UK Scientists and Engineering Competition offers opportunities for young people to showcase their STEM projects and the regional heats are held at the event. In 2019 there were 81 regional heat entries into this competition and a number of them were nominated to go forward to the National Finals in March 2020.

Watch this space for details on how to book places for your school children (ages 9-19yrs) at the 2020 event.

Get Involved … Volunteer

With so many young people attending this interactive event we need a large number of volunteers to help the day run smoothly. The event provides a brilliant volunteering experience for employees of STEM organisations.

You don’t need a STEM background – although it could help

Taking part gives a common, and fun purpose that unites staff

Improves team work by giving employees something non-target related

Improves staff morale, allowing them an opportunity to give back to the community

Provides staff development opportunities relating to outreach and promotional skills and realising hidden talents/enthusiasm.

If you or staff members within your organisation would like to be a volunteer in 2020 please get in touch on 0345 6080190 or

The Big Bang UK Young Scientists & Engineers Competition is our biggest annual STEM competition.

Students in full time education (Yrs 7-13) can enter.

If you have students who were unsuccessful entrants in our regional heat at the Big Bang Fair south East, they have the opportunity to use their judge’s feedback to develop their project and have a second chance by entering online.

Students can enter this competition at the South East Regional Heats which takes place on Wednesday 1st July 2020 at the Big Bang Fair South East.

STEM Sussex coordinates the Big Bang South East programme of events on behalf of Engineering UK supported by delivery partners from across the region. The programme includes Big Bang Near Me events which enable students and STEM organisations to have the great interactive Big Bang event experience on a smaller scale and closer to their schools.

There were 20 ‘little’ Big Bang events across the South East in 2018, and over 13,500 students and teachers from 337 schools attended them.
