2019 STEM Youth Innovation Competition – Shortlist Teams Announced!

Published: 24 April 2019

British International Education Association (BIEA) and Born Free Foundation have announced the shortlist for the BIEA 2019 International STEM Youth Innovation Competition.

This competition is held every year and seeks to stimulate passion for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in young people.

The theme of the competition this year has been “Fighting Extinction via drone technology” and students were asked to come up with a drone design to aid in the conservation of an endangered species. There were almost 100 submissions by teams from 34 different countries and regions and the finalists are truly international. Over a third of the entries were from girls, with submitted projects focusing on an enormous variety of endangered animals including snow leopards, black rhinos, pangolins, turtles and elephants.

45 teams are through to the July finals and can be viewed here. We are proud to see that one of the teams is from Sussex – Portslade Aldridge Community Academy (PACA). Congratulations and good luck to all.

In the next round of the competition, students will have the opportunity to purchase, modify and fly a drone. They will complete two videos, one in which they demonstrate their modified drone in action, and a second where they present their work up to date. If they complete this round successfully, they will be invited to the UK for the live finals in July.

These finals will be held at the London Royal Air Force Museum where entrants will display their completed projects to their peers and a panel of judges. The overall winner will win £5,000. There will also be a range of awards and honours given out across the age ranges.
